Sobre o autor

Publius Ovidius Naso, known as Ovid in the English-speaking world, was a Roman poet who lived from 43 BCE until 17 or 18 CE. Ovid was one of the most prolific poets of his time and the last significant literary figure of the Augustan age. His poetic style was rich in its range of themes and its innovative use of the Latin language. Ovid’s early work ‘Remedia Amoris; or, The Remedy of Love’ is a sequel to his ‘Ars Amatoria’ and offers advice on how to overcome love. This work, like much of his oeuvre, is characterized by its elegance, wit, and ingenious use of mythological references. His most recognized work ‘Metamorphoses, ‘ a narrative poem in 15 books, has had a monumental impact on Western literature and art. It compiles an extensive collection of mythological and historical transformations, reflecting both the literary genius and the complex cultural fabric of his times. Ovid’s influence spans through the ages, being a major source for Shakespeare and Dante, among others. His themes of love, exile, and metamorphosis have provided a rich field for commentary and analysis by scholars, and his works remain a cornerstone in the study of Latin literature. Unfortunately, Ovid’s brilliant career was marred by his exile to Tomis on the Black Sea by Emperor Augustus for reasons still not entirely clear, an event which profoundly influenced his later work.
