Historiadora cultural especializada en música soviética, es profesora de Música en la Universidad de Bristol. Su primer libro, A Soviet Credo: Shostakovich”s Fourth Symphony (2006) fue un estudio en profundidad de la obra maestra sinfónica de Shostakovich, que tuvo que esperar veinticinco años para su estreno en la era posterior a Stalin. Por Clásicos para las masas (2016), su segunda monografía, fue coganadora del BASEES Women”s Forum Premio del libro en 2018. Ha sido editora de tres The Cambridge Companion to Shostakovich (con David Fanning, Cambridge University Press, 2008), Shostakovich Studies 2 (Cambridge University Press, 2010) y Twentieth Century Music and Politics: Essays in memory of Neil Edmunds (Ashgate, 2012).
Es vicepresidenta electa de la Royal Musical Association, coeditora de la revista CUP Twentieth-Century Music, editora de la serie de música rusa y de Europa del Este de Routledge, y forma parte del comité editorial de la revista moscovita Iskusstvo muzïki. Teoriya i istoriya. Junto con Olga Digonskaya (Archivo Shostakovich en Moscú), dirige el grupo de estudio «Shostakovich and his Epoch» de la International Musicological Society y es miembro del Grupo de Estudios de la Música Rusa y de Europa del Este de la British Association of Slavonic and East European Studies.
