Philip Mansel, geb. 1951 in London, ist Historiker und wurde in Oxford promoviert. Er verfasste zahlreiche Bücher, auf Deutsch ist erschienen “Der Prinz Europas. Prince Charles-Joseph de Ligne” (Klett-Cotta 2006). Mit seinem Lebenspartner lebt Mansel wahlweise in London und auf einem Schloss an der Steilküste von Dorset, das seit 1330 im Besitz der Familie ist. Er ist Fellow der Royal Historical Society und der Royal Society of Literature sowie Präsident des Rates der Wissenschaften am Centre de Recherche du Château de Versailles.
