Sara Duncan (1861-1922), in Ontario geboren, gehörte selbst lange Zeit der anglo-indischen Gemeinschaft an. Während einer Weltreise begegnete sie auf einem Empfang des Vizekönigs, Lord Lansdowne, Everard Cotes, der ihr 1890 am Taj Mahal einen Antrag machte. Zusammen mit ihm hatte sie als Journalistin Zugang bis in die höchsten Kreise der Kolonialverwaltung. Mit scharfem Blick und spitzer Feder beschreibt sie in zahlreichen Romanen und Erzählungen den in jeder Hinsicht konfliktreichen Alltag von Vertretern der britischen Gesellschaft, die fern der Heimat an ihren Idealen zu scheitern drohen. 1915 zog Duncan nach England, wohin ihr Mann 1920 folgte. Kurz nach ihrem Umzug aufs Land starb sie 1922 in Surrey an einer Lungenkrankheit.
