Peter Unwin has contributed many obituaries to The Times since his retirement from the Diplomatic Service. In the course of his diplomatic career he served in Japan, the United States and Germany and, as ambassador, in Hungary and Denmark. From 1989 to 1993 he was a deputy secretary general of the Commonwealth. He has published several books, most notably Hearts, Minds & Interests: Britain”s Place in the World and The Narrow Sea, a history of the English Channel.
