Bright young doctor Ovid Vere changes his plans after the beautiful girl he follows one night turns out to be his step-cousin Carmina. Though she inherits a fortune, she must obey her father’s dying wish and live with Ovid’s mother. Ovid and Carmina fall in love despite her troubling fainting spells and his mother’s attempts to keep them apart. William Wilkie Collins (1824–1889) was considered the “godfather” of the detective novel. His “sensation novels” brought Collins great popularity in the Victorian era. He also focused on serious social and domestic issues. Collins published thirty novels (including The Woman in White), more than sixty short stories, and over a dozen plays, in addition to numerous nonfiction pieces.
