As a Washington, DC correspondent for the London Times, the author explored both sides of the American Civil War. Beginning in 1861, he recorded not just military actions, but also the voices and stories of ordinary citizens and soldiers, the sights and sounds of war, travel by rail and steamship, dining with Lincoln, and much more.
