John W. Betlyon, Chaplain (Lieutenant Colonel), United States Army (Retired), served as the Battalion Chaplain of 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor, in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Chaplain Betlyon was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the US Army Reserve, after having been ordained as a pastor in the United Methodist Church. He is a graduate of Bucknell University, and holds a PhD in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from Harvard University. In addition to his military duties in the Army Reserve and Pennsylvania Army National Guard, including depoloyment in Afghanistan, he is a retired pastor of the United Methodist Church with over thirty-nine years of service. He is lecturer in Classics and Jewish Studies at the Pennsylvania State University. He and his with Sandie live in State College, Pennsylvania.
