Anicius Manlius Severinus Boëthius (um 480 – etwa 524) entstammte einer Familie, die sich als eine der ersten des römischen Adels bereits um die Mitte des 4. Jahrhunderts zum Christentum bekannt hat und lange Zeit höchste Ämter im Westen des römischen Reiches besetzte. Der hochgebildete Boëthius erregte das Interesse des Ostgotenkönigs Theoderich, unter dem für Italien eine dreißigjährige Friedenszeit begann, in der Kunst und Wissenschaft eine neue, späte Blüte erfuhren. Boëthius gelangte bis in höchste Ämter: Im Jahre 510 wurde er Konsul und später ranghöchster Minister. In dieser Phase wurde er in einen Hochverratsprozess hineingezogen, der seinen Ursprung in den Gegensätzen zwischen den einflussreichen Ostgoten am Hofe Theoderichs, dem Senat in Rom und dem Kaiser in Byzanz hatte. Die Anhänger Theoderichs erreichten die Absetzung des Boëthius. Vom Amt suspendiert wurde er nach Pavia gebracht, im Sommer 524 zum Tode verurteilt und wahrscheinlich im Herbst 524 hingerichtet.
