Clement, the Bishop of Rome, wrote his Letter to the Corinthians close to the end of the first century AD. The letter was highly respected in the early Church, and some Christians even included it among the canonical books of the New Testament. The work known as Second Clement is the earliest surviving Christian sermon outside of the New Testament. Although the work does not identify the author, the manuscripts that preserve the text identify it as written by the same Clement. Modern scholars date it to the first years of the second century AD. Both works, written originally in Greek, offer fascinating insights into the nature of the earliest Christian writings, at a time before the New Testament canon had been finalized.
