This 1919 novel is the fourth in Richardson’s remarkable thirteen-volume series called Pilgrimage. The heroine, Miriam, arrives in London and begins to forge her own life there as a modern, liberated woman. Richardson’s long affair with H. G. Wells is reputedly the basis for her depiction of the character Hypo G. Wilson.
