Hannah Webster Foster was distantly related, through her husband Reverend John Foster, to Elizabeth Whitman. She was born in 1758 in Massachusetts to well-to-do parents Grant Webster and Hannah Wainwright Webster.Like The Coquette, Foster’s second novel has ties to the author’s real life. The Boarding School, or, Lessons of a Preceptress to Her Students, is based on the years she spent in boarding school after her mother’s death.
