Der Durchbruch erfolgte 1971 mit dem Roman »Frühling einen Sommer lang«, der auf autobiographischen Ereignissen basiert. Herman Raucher schrieb auch das Drehbuch zu der oscarprämierten Filmfassung des Erfolgstitels. 2001 erlebte das Buch durch eine Musicalversion ein einzigartiges Revival.
