Howard Mehlinger is a retired professor and a former Dean of the School of Education at Indiana University. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Mc Pherson College and his master’s and Ph D degrees from the University of Kansas. He is the author, co-author, editor or co-editor of 15 books ranging from a scholarly monograph on the 1905 Russian Revolution, to a textbook for teaching civics and American government in secondary schools, to a UNESCO handbook on the teaching of social studies in member states. His most recent work was an autobiography, The Best that I Can Recall, published by Authorhouse in 2009. He has taught high school students, university undergraduates and graduate students, and has conducted workshops for educational leaders throughout the United States and elsewhere. He has traveled extensively, visiting every continent except Antarctica and serving as an adviser, consultant, and lecturer in several nations in Europe, Asia, and Africa. During his career he has served on several state and national committees and commissions; in 1977 he was President of the National Council for the Social Studies. Along the way he has earned many awards and recognitions, including the Outstanding Civilian Service Award from the Department of the Army, two outstanding service awards from Indiana University, and the Sagamore of the Wabash Award from the State of Indiana. He lives in Bloomington, Indiana with his wife Carolee. They have three children, eight grandchildren, and two great grandsons.
