James Legge (1815-1897) was a Scottish Congregationalist and sinologist. He represented the London Missionary Society in Malacca and Hong Kong. The first professor of Chinese at Oxford, he prepared the 50-volume Sacred Books of the East series (1879-1891) with Max Müller. His writings include The Life and Teaching of Confucius and The Texts of Taoism. He is most famous as the translator of the I Ching.
