The need for exploring energy resources (coal, oil, natural gas, coalbed methane, uranium, oil shale, wind, solar, hydro, and geothermal) to meet skyrocketing energy demands while protecting the environment (atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere) has become obvious in recent years. As society relies more heavily on difficult to extract and non-traditional energy resources, it is often more challenging to ensure a low impact on the environment.
