M.P. Shiel was a prolific British writer of supernatural horror and scientific romance novels. Shiel is now best known for being one of the first authors to write in the future history genre.
The Purple Cloud is Shiel’s most famous work. The book is noted for being one of the first post-apocalyptic novels and it was also the basis for The World, The Flesh and the Devil, a movie made in 1959.
