Mary Chesnut changed history to herstory. “From today forward, ” she writes in the first entry of
A Diary from Dixie, “I will tell the story in my own way.” From the Secession Convention in Charleston all the way to Lee’s surrender, Chesnut recorded the dramatic events of the Civil War.
