Peter Wright was born on Merseyside, England in 1926. His father. a marine engineer, was killed in 1937. Peter was sent to a Dominican boarding school, Blackfriars, where his mother hoped that he would become a priest. Instead, he chose to go to sea as an apprentice in the Merchant Navy. He left school in 1943 and joined a ship in Hull, Yorkshire, He sailed around all the coasts of Africa.
In 1965 he found a job in San Francisco working as Port Captain and in 1976, became a marine surveyor investigating the causes and extent of marine loss. In 1983 he met his third wife, Gloria, R.N, M.A a psychotherapist. They were married in 1985. Peter retired in 1991. Gloria became a skilled marriage, family and child counselor. She died as a result of lower abdominal cancer in 2009.
After a long struggle with alcohol, peter achieved sobriety in 1983 and remains sober to this day, due much to the support of Gloria to whose memory this book is written. Peter still lives in Redding, California. where he and Gloria lived for eighteen years.
