Most of them have been collected by word of mouth from regular people who were not musicians. The songs have been notated for piano and singers by Henry Fleetwood Sheppard and Frederick Bussell.

S. Baring-Gould (1834-1924) was an Anglican priest, folk song collector, hagiographer, antiquarian, author, and a wide-ranging scholar. His catalog comprises more than 1240 publications. He is reminisced especially as a writer of hymns, the most known being ‘Onward, Christian Soldiers’ and ‘Now the Day Is Over’.
