Cicero is a man on whom most judgments have been harsh. His political ideals, though sincerely held, were bypassed by the march of events; his public life was a series of frustrations; his personality was egotistical. However, as a speaker and a thinker, as a master of the use of language, and as a man of cultured interests and human disposition he deserves sympathetic study.
