Tom Regan (Pittsburgh, 1938) es profesor de filosofía de la Universidad Estatal de Carolina del Norte. Ha dedicado su vida a la reflexión y defensa de los derechos de los animales, lo cual lo ha convertido en uno de los líderes de este movimiento. Sus teorías sobre política ambiental y ética médica son frecuentemente discutidas en revistas de filosofía y sociología. Gracias a sus libros, documentales y activismo fue galardonado en 1986 con el Mahatma Gandhi Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Animal Rights Movement. Autor de Empty Cages: Facing the Challenge of Animal Rights y Animal Sacrifices: Religious Perspectives on the Use of Animals in Science, su obra se ha convertido en un clásico moderno.
