The original work, Water Margin, is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of China, written by Shi Nai’an. The novel depicts the story of 108 heroes from Liangshan who rebel against corrupt officials and oppressors. Set during the Song Dynasty, it primarily tells how these valiant figures are forced to join Liangshan for various reasons, ultimately coming together to form an armed force that fights for justice.
