Born black and poor, King journeyed to Chicago at the age of 15. He married, had a child and briefly pursued a semi-pro boxing career. However, he was sent to prison in 1970 for 35 years for a crime he didn’t commit. While incarcerated he joined the Black Panther Party and successful lobbied to improve prisoner condistions.
