Along with Batman, Spider-Man, and Superman, the Joker stands out as one of the most recognizable comics characters in popular culture. While there has been a great deal of scholarly attention on superheroes, very little has been done to understand supervillains. Robert G. Weineris popular culture librarian at Texas Tech University. His work has been published in several journals, and he is coeditor (with Robert Moses Peaslee) of The Supervillain Reader and The Joker: Critical Essays on the Clown Prince of Crime, both published by University Press of Mississippi, and Web-Spinning Heroics: Critical Essays on the History and Meaning of Spider-Man, as well as Marvel Comics into Film: Essays on Adaptations since the 1940s (with Matthew Mc Eniry).
