Al Alvarez nació en Londres en 1929. Estudió en Oundle School y en la Universidad de Oxford. Recibió la beca de investigación Jane Eliza Procter de la Universidad de Princeton, y fue profesor en Oxford y Estados Unidos. Desde muy joven empezó a escribir poesía, novela y ensayo, y llegó a ser uno de los más importantes editores y críticos de poesía en The Observer, donde dio a conocer la obra de autores como Sylvia Plath y Robert Lowell. En español se han publicado en los últimos años su autobiografía y sus libros sobre la noche, el póquer, el montañismo y un bellísimo diario sobre el envejecer. Reconocido como uno de los ensayistas más versátiles e interesantes de la literatura inglesa contemporánea, falleció en Londres en 2019.
