Published on the occasion of the 250th birthday of the Theology Stift of the University of Göttingen, this volume retells the history of one of the University´s oldest institutions. It includes portraits of famous benefactors and essays on the most important dimensions of life at the Stift. The importance of this premier theological institute of education becomes clear to the reader. Now 250 years old, the Theology Stift of the Georg August University of Göttingen belongs to the oldest institutions this university has. It was founded in 1765 and since that time has served especially as a place for educating young theologians. Many of its ‘inspectors’ later became pioneers in the field. This volume reports the life and works of many of the most famous benefactors, from Bernhard Duhm to Julius Wellhausen, from Hans von Campenhausen to Emanuel Hirsch and Rudolf Otto to Theodor Zahn. These portraits are embedded in a history of the Stift as an educational institution and in essays about facets of life in the Stift which proved to be important to its existence: fellowship, interdisciplinarity, music, politics, and much much more.
