Maria Gurlitt-Sartori studierte an der Universität Freiburg Anglistik, Germanistik und Volkskunde für das Lehramt an Gymnasien. Nach mehrjähriger Praxis als Lehrerin und einem dreijährigen Ägypten-Aufenthalt ist sie seit 1992 als Übersetzerin tätig. Zu ihren Schwerpunktthemen gehören Literatur, Kunst, Kunsthandwerk, Botanik, Garten- und Landschaftsgestaltung mit besonderem Interesse an Architektur und Geschichte der Gärten sowie an der Biografie der Schöpferpersönlichkeiten. In Recherchen und naturwissenschaftlichen Fragen wird sie von Christoph Gurlitt (Studium der Mathematik und Physik) unterstützt.
