In Out of the Silent Planet, the first book of C.S. Lewis’ celebrated Space Trilogy, two men, Devine and Weston, capture a third, Ransom, and take him to the planet of Malacandra via a space craft. When Ransom learns that the men plan to sacrifice him to the strange planet’s inhabitants, he escapes on foot. C. S. Lewis (1898-1963) was a British novelist, poet, academic, medievalist, literary critic, essayist, lay theologian, broadcaster, lecturer, and Christian apologist. He held academic positions at both Oxford University and Cambridge University but is best known for his works of fiction-such as The Chronicles of Narnia, The Space Trilogy, and The Screwtape Letters-and for his nonfiction-such as Mere Christianity, A Grief Observed, and The Problem of Pain-which still continue to attract thousands of new readers every year.
