Constantine Mavroudis, M.D. is the Medical Director of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. He is also Professor Emeritus of Surgery at Johns Hopkins University Medical School in Baltimore, Maryland. A past president of the Congenital Heart Surgeons’ Society and the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, Dr. Mavroudis is a renowed expert in the field of congenital heart surgery with a particular emphasis on arrhythmia surgery, coronary artery disease, and bioethics. Dr. Mavroudis has published over 500 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on congenital heart surgery. In addition to editing three prior editions of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery, he has also edited the Atlas of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery and the Atlas of Adult Congenital Heart Surgery.
Carl L. Backer, M.D. is the Chief of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at UK Health Care Kentucky Children’s Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky and Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is a past president of the Congenital Heart Surgeons’ Society and a current Director on the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Backer is the editor-in-chief of the World Journal for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery and current President of the Mayo Clinic Alumni Association. He has a strong clinical interest in vascular ring surgery, tracheal surgery, and pediatric heart transplantation. He has authored over 450 peer-reviewed articles and 105 book chapters. In addition to editing three prior editions of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery, he has also served as co-editor of the Atlas of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery, and Wilcox’s Surgical Anatomy (4th edition).
Dr. Mavroudis and Dr. Backer worked together at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois from 1989 — 2008.
