Part historical document and part novel, the great architect draws on his own experience in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871 to imagine the castle Le Roche-Pont, an ideal defense for France. Emphasizing the importance of artillery and a strong shield of fortresses, this 1876 work influenced French military thinking through two World Wars.
Об авторе
Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc (1814-1879) was a Paris-born architect and theorist, known for his sometimes controversial restorations of medieval buildings, including Notre Dame in Paris. His theories on restoration, Gothic architecture, and the form and purpose of structures foresaw a great deal of modern architectural thinking. He spent his later life in Switzerland.
