Der Band geht auf eine Ringvorlesung zurück, die im Sommersemester 2015 am Fachbereich Evangelische Theologie der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt stattfand. Die beteiligten (Frankfurter und Gießener) Kolleginnen und Kollegen waren vor die Aufgabe gestellt, im Ausgang von ihrem jeweiligen Selbstverständnis als Vertreter einer bestimmten Fachdisziplin einen Begriff von evangelischer Theologie an sich zu entfalten. Dieser Begriff sollte dann zum Zwecke einer fundamentaltheologischen Selbstverständigung enzyklopädisch kontextualisiert werden.
Im Ergebnis erscheint das Gesamttableau der für die Publikation nochmals überarbeiteten Beiträge durchaus disparat. Dies sollte als Ausdruck des Versuchs gewertet werden, über Eigenart, binnenakademische Funktion und gesellschaftliche Relevanz protestantischen Denkens in einer Zeit neu nachzudenken, die mit der vielfach konstatierten Krise der Theologie als akademischer Disziplin an staatlichen Universitäten deren Sinn grundsätzlich in Frage stellt.

[Protestant Theology. An Encyclopedic Account]
The present volume is based on the proceedings of a lecture-series organized by and held at the Department of Protestant Theology at Goethe University-Frankfurt between May and July 2015. Each contributor was asked and encouraged to outline a concept of Protestant theology, and this from the specific perspective of (his/her understanding of) the discipline in question. The second task called for an encyclopedic contextualization of the prior findings.
The results turned out, perhaps not surprisingly, quite diverse, even disparate. As such they should not be dismissed out of hand as purely negative or at least disadvantageous; for their diversity might just as well be read as an incitement to and, in fact, an authentic expression of the attempt to reconsider afresh the nature, function/s and social relevance of protestant thinking in a time, in which the meaningfulness of theology as a full-fledged academic discipline has been severely called into question.
