Described by Virginia Woolf as “capricious, exacting, exquisite, very learned, and beautifully dressed, ” Mirrlees was friends with T. S. Eliot and Gertrude Stein, and was the partner of well-regarded classicist Jane Ellen Harrison. Mirrlees published only three novels in her lifetime, the most famous of which is the increasingly influential
Lud-in-the-Mist.
