In his military career, he took part in several campaigns in different parts, including Portugal, France, and India. He also traveled to Egypt and Italy. The accounts of his travels, published as books, enjoyed great popularity in his times and survived several editions. His work about Duke of Wellington was published as a part of Dionysius Lardner’s Cabinet Cyclopædia.
