(París, 1740- 1814) Escritor francés. Amigo de Crébillon hijo y de Diderot, es autor de numerosos dramas históricos y de tema burgués (La carretilla del vinagrero, 1775). Ejerció gran influencia en el teatro francés de su época con una obra teórica: Tratado del teatro (1773). Es autor, también, de la novela utópica El año 2440 (1771), de un Cuadro de París (1781-1790), indispensable documento sobre la Francia prerrevolucionaria, y de la innovadora Neología o Vocabulario de nuevas palabras (1801).
