Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. Originally published in 1894 this book was one of the first introductions of Buddhism to the West. In particular the topic is approached from a Christian point of view, showing parallels between the teachings of the two faiths and between their respective holy figures. This edition contains the beautiful original images and is often recommended to Christians wishing to learn more about the teachings of Buddhism.<br><br>Paul Carus had an obvious and deep respect for Buddhism and other Eastern traditions and that shines through in this work. It contains fine descriptions of the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, as well as many parables of the Buddha. Where documents have been translated, while they would doubtless have been translated differently these days, they have been done so with great sensitivity.
