The Apology of Socrates, written by Plato, is a Socratic dialogue of the speech of legal self-defence which Socrates spoke at his trial for impiety and corruption in 399 BC. The main idea of Plato’s Apology is that the judges who condemned Socrates to death, and the climate of opinion in Athens that led to the charges against Socrates, were unjust and untrue. In the Apology, Plato argues that Socrates, not the judges and not Athens, represent the truth. The thesis that Socrates’ defence speech was his attempt to demonstrate his wisdom without sufficiently proving his innocence may receive objections.
