Raymond J. Golarz was born in East Hammond, Indiana, the setting for this book. He spent his earliest formative years in this community. He married Marion Joyce Simpson, and together they have six children: Tanya, Michael, Scott, Jocelyn, Daniel and Thomas John. He became a teacher and later directed delinquency prevention programs near Chicago. He taught law enforcement officers before becoming superintendent of schools. He taught psychology at St. Joseph’s College, Purdue Calumet, Indiana University Northwest, and City College in Seattle. He has keynoted major conferences in virtually every state. He is co-author with his wife Marion of The Power of Participation, published in 1995, the author of When the Yellow Jackets Played, published in 2009, and the author of Yellow Jacket Football in Hard Times and Good, published in 2010.
He received his doctorate from Indiana University in 1980. He currently resides in Bloomington, Indiana, with his wife Marion.
Marion J. Golarz received a B.S. in English Language Arts and an M.S. in Education with a certification in the area of reading from Indiana University at Bloomington. She has taught high school English and was a Title 1 reading teacher for elementary, middle school, and high school students. She also taught at Purdue University Calumet as a guest lecturer in composition and as an advisor in the writing lab and as a guest lecturer in composition at Indiana University East. Her educational experiences also include work in various venues with teachers, parents, and administrators, presenting research reviews and leading discussions on educational topics. In 1967 she married Raymond and together they have six children. With her husband, Raymond, she co-authored The Power of Participation, an in-depth guide for cooperative decision making in American schools.
