About the author
Samuel Johnson (1822-1882) was born in Salem, Massachusetts. A clergyman and author, he graduated from Harvard Divinity School, but alienated his congregation with his opposition to slavery. With Samuel Longfellow he compiled a Book of Hymns (1846) and Hymns to the Spirit (1864). His writings include The Worship of Jesus (1868) and a biography, Theodore Parker (1890).
