About the author


Samuel Smiles (1812-1904) was born in Edinburgh, the eldest of eleven children. After studying medicine and finding work as a doctor, he embarked on a long career in politics. He then turned to a writing career, promoting self-improvement—leading to the self-publication of his first book, Self-Help, in 1859.
