‘Bande Mataram‘ is the title of a daily and weekly English Newspaper which was published between 1906 – 1908. The editorials in this newspaper were written by Sri Aurobindo, who was seen by the British government as ‘the most dangerous man’ to watch, as he advocated for Purna Swaraj – or complete independence, at a time when the best minds of India were only pleading to be governed better. Minto, the Viceroy of India at the time described him as ‘the most dangerous man with whom we had to deal’. Edward Baker, the Governor of Bengal wrote of him ‘he is an active generator of revolutionary sentiment…. I attribute the spread of seditious doctrines to him personally in a greater degree than to any other single individual in Bengal, or possibly in India.’ Ideas espoused in ‘Bande Mataram’ Newspaper inspired the Boycott, Swadeshi and Passive Resistance movement that were later instrumental in liberating India from the tyrannical British Government.
