Abbé de Vertot, born René-Aubert Vertot d”Aubeuf in 1655, was a French historiographer noted for his tendency to focus on the political and military histories of various European powers. A member of the scholarly society Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, Vertot gained prominence through his meticulous yet engaging historical narratives. Vertot”s ”The Revolutions of Portugal” (”Histoire des révolutions arrivées dans le gouvernement de la République Romaine”, 1689) remains one of his significant contributions to the chronicles of political upheaval. In this work, Vertot does not merely recount events, but provides a vibrant portrayal of the shifts in power dynamics that marked the 1640 Portuguese Restoration War, offering rich insights into the intricacies of statecraft and revolution. His narrative style oscillates between the strictly factual documentation of a historian and the dramatic flair of a storyteller, offering readers an immersive experience of the tumultuous periods he describes. Though later criticized for some historical inaccuracies and for reliance on dubious sources, Vertot”s work was influential in shaping the contemporary understanding of Portugal”s quest for autonomy from Spain and has remained a reference in the historiography of revolutions.
