The second chapter explains that preeclampsia, a pregnancy-specific syndrome of reduced organ perfusion secondary to vasospasm and endothelial activation, is a major complication in pregnancy, occurring in 7-10% of all pregnant women, and is one of the major causes of maternal morbidity and mortality, preterm birth, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), and perinatal mortality. The author explores the way in which markers of endothelial dysfunction could be used to predict hypertensive disorders in pregnancy.
