Francis Parkman (1823–1893) was one of America’s greatest historians and adventurers. He is best known for The Oregon Trail and his masterly seven-volume series, France and England in North America, which Edmund Wilson called ’among the most brilliant achievements of the writing of history as an art.’  The annual prize awarded by the Society of American Historians is named after him.
