He currently serves as the Senior Advisor to the Director of the National Research Foundation of the UAE and as the Vice-Chair of the International Experts Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Previously, Prof. Crawley served as the Director of the Frontiers Engineering and Science Directorate of Science Foundation Ireland from 2004 to 2007. Prior to this, Prof. Crawley was the Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics at the University of South Carolina from 1998 to 2004. At Michigan State University, he was Dean of the Graduate School from 1994 to 1998 and earlier Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy from 1988 to 1994. Professor Crawley served two terms at the US National Science Foundation, one as the Director of the Physics Division, 1987–1988, and earlier as a Program Officer in the Nuclear Physics Program. He has also served as the Chair of the Nuclear Physics Division of the American Physical Society during 1991–1992. Professor Crawley was born in Scotland but his first degree is from the University of Melbourne in Australia. He obtained his PhD in Physics from Princeton University in 1965. He is the author of over 150 articles in refereed journals and wrote a textbook Energy published in 1975 by Macmillan.About the ContributorsBertrand Barré (Chapters 1, 2, 3) is Professor Emeritus of Nuclear Engineering at the French Institut National des Sciences et Techniques Nucléaires (INSTN), and a teacher at Sciences Po/Paris School for International Affairs. Born in December 1942, B Barré joined the French Atomic Energy commission, CEA, in 1967 and has been working ever since, both in France and abroad, on the development of Nuclear Power. Alternating scientific and managerial positions, Prof. Barré was notably Nuclear Attaché at the French Embassy in Washington (USA), Director of Engineering in TECHNICATOME (now AREVA-TA), Director of the Nuclear Reactor Directorate of the CEA and Vice-president in charge of R&D in COGEMA (now AREVA-NC). Until December 2012, he was Scientific Advisor to the Chairman of the AREVA group. Bertrand Barré is a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society (ANS), former Chairman of the French Nuclear Energy Society (SFEN), former President of the European Nuclear Society (ENS) and the International Nuclear Societies Council (INSC), former Chairman of the International Nuclear Energy Academy (INEA), and former Vice-Chairman of the Scientific and Technical Committee of EURATOM. He was appointed the first Chairman of SAGNE (Standing Advisory Group for Nuclear Energy) by the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency IAEA.Robert J Goldston (Chapter 6) is a Professor in the Department of Astrophysical Sciences at Princeton University. He was Director of the DOE Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory from 1997–2009. He has made numerous experimental and theoretical contributions to fusion plasma physics over the last 40 years, exploring plasma heating, energy confinement, and — since stepping down as Director of PPPL — the physics of plasma power and particle exhaust. He is associated faculty with the Princeton Environmental Institute, and affiliated faculty with Princeton”s Program in Science and Global Security, and has been examining socio-economic aspects of fusion power. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and recipient of its ”Excellence in Plasma Physics” award. He also chaired the American Physical Society”s Physics Policy Committee.
