Included are accounts of his 1839 trip with his brother along the Concord and Merrimac Rivers, as well as travels to Staten Island and his famous “Journey West, ” to Minnesota.

He is best known for the collection of essays published under the title Walden (1854), inspired by his solitary sojourn at Walden Pond. His ideas on civil disobedience influenced Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr.
