Quintus Horatius Flaccus (65 BC – 8 BC), known in the English-speaking world as Horace, was a Roman lyric poet during the time of Augustus, the first Roman emperor. Renowned for his Odes and Satires, Horace crafted a body of work that has exerted lasting influence on Western literature and arts. Horace”s work often reflects his gentle aristocratic stoicism, his personal and political independence, and his classic sense of form. However, the title ”Life: Its True Genesis” is not a work typically attributed to Horace. The confusion may arise from modern authors or uses of the name. Indeed, his writings such as ”Ars Poetica” and ”Epistles” remain pivotal texts for scholars of classic literature and provide insights into the philosophy and mores of the Roman world. Horace deftly balanced literary tradition with the revolutionary politics of his day, embodying the values of the Pax Romana while playing the role of the poetic vates (seer or prophet). His sophisticated iambs and lyric poetry have been formative for the development of Latin verse, influencing both contemporaries and many later poets, from Petrarch to W. H. Auden. Whether addressing the lofty themes of politics and philosophy or engaging with more intimate subjects of love and friendship, Horace”s work resonates with the human experience and the pursuit of a balanced life (”aurea mediocritas”).
