Welcome to the Essential Novelists book series, were we present to you the best works of remarkable authors.
For this book, the literary critic August Nemo has chosen the two most important and meaningful novels of Jane Barkerwhich are The Amours of Bosvil and Galesia, and Exilius.
Jane Barker, who wrote during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century, shows remarkable daring and originality both as a poet and as a writer of prose fiction. Critical attention to her as a proto-feminist has recently been joined by attention to the political (Catholic and Jacobite) slant of her writings. From her debut as a coterie writer circulating her poems among a group of admiring male friends, Jane Barker became a denizen of the literary marketplace and a voice both for the silent elements in women’s experience and for the silenced Catholic and Jacobite elements in national life.
Novels selected for this book:

– Exilius This is one of many books in the series Essential Novelists. If you liked this book, look for the other titles in the series, we are sure you will like some of the authors
Om författaren
Jane Barker (16521732) was a popular English fiction writer, poet, and a staunch Jacobite. She went into self-imposed exile when James II fled England during the Glorious Revolution in 1688. Although not known for her letter writing, four extant letters are located in the British Library and within the Magdalen Manuscript at the Oxford Magdalen library, written between 1670-88. Jane Barker was one of the first female authors to publish writings both in manuscript and print form, allowing modern scholars to study ’the passage of Barker’s poetry from coterie circles to larger, more impersonal communities of readers’. Never married, Jane Barker died quietly in 1732.
