It’s moving day, and a very exciting day, too, for Valerie Bryce! Fancy, they’ll not only be moving in with their daughter Susie and her family – she’d been expecting that to happen sooner or later now that she and Andy are getting on a bit – but they’re also leaving the dilapidated seaside town in which they’ve lived for well over 40 years, for a wonderful Grade 2 listed house, with swimming pool, set in extensive gardens in a delightfully pretty rural village. Well, it looks lovely in the brochure; they haven’t actually seen it yet, but still…
Andy has his reservations, and the decision to sell up took a bit of getting to… but all decisions are made with an objective in mind, and Val’s is a comfortable, peaceful, contented old age in the bosom of her family. Sometimes, though, things don’t turn out quite as anticipated. Already elderly, through the next few years events become more and more challenging; yet their deep love for each other shines through to the last pages, and Val’s voice and thoughts take us right inside the lovely characters.
Jenny Piper is a wonderful author who makes no bones about her handling of delicate subjects . Her skill as a story-teller is a delight to the heart and soul. She lives with her husband in rural Hampshire, and has been variously an actress, an artist, a teacher and a psychologist, but has had a lifelong love of books and nowadays spends much of her time writing. Her first novel, Someday, Maybe, has a sequel in the writing.
