This book is the fifth volume of the Collection of Roth’s Novels. It is included in Joseph Roth’s Novel Book of Job. The protagonist Mendel Singh is a devout Jew who lives in a small Eastern European city. His family lives hard by Singh’s teaching Hebrew Scriptures. Menusim, the youngest son, was not only born with epilepsy, but also in a state of dementia and aphasia. After the first son joined the army, the second son fled to the United States, and the Singhs and their daughters immigrated to the United States. With the outbreak of World War I, unfortunately, one after another, his second son died in the battlefield, Singh’s wife died suddenly, and his daughter went crazy into a mental hospital. Singer’s fate, like job in the Bible, is under the test of disaster. When he gave up his reverence and belief in God, walked like a corpse and was about to return to his hometown, a miracle happened. His youngest son Menusim suddenly appeared in front of him. He was no longer the dementia with epilepsy, but an elegant and charming young musician.
